How We Review AI Tools
The short version: we test what we recommend, we publish what we find, and we name our own products when we list them. Every review you read here was written after hands-on use.
Our Methodology
Every tool listed in the directory goes through the same review process. We don't auto-aggregate scores, we don't copy marketing pages, and we don't accept paid placements in the editorial verdict.
- Hands-on testing. We sign up, generate output, push the free tier until it breaks, and where possible test the paid tier on a real workload. We note what the tool does well and where it actually struggles — not what the marketing page says it does.
- Comparison against alternatives. No tool is reviewed in isolation. Each tool is compared against at least 2-3 direct competitors in the same category, on the same use cases, to surface real positioning rather than feature-list claims.
- Editorial verdict. Every tool detail page includes a hand-written verdict naming a specific strength, a specific limitation, and the type of user it's right (and wrong) for. This is the page's most opinion-bearing section and it's written by a human editor, not generated from a template.
- Rating scale. Ratings are 1.0–5.0 with one decimal. A 4.8 is "we'd recommend this without hedging." A 4.0 is "this is fine for the right use case." A 3.5 is "look at alternatives first." We don't hand out 5.0 ratings — there's always something a tool could do better.
- Re-review on major releases. Tools that ship a meaningful version update (new model, pricing change, new capability) get re-tested. The page's "Updated" date reflects the last review pass, not the page's creation date.
Our Own Products — Disclosed
We build and ship a small set of AI tools ourselves: Kling AI Video, Face Swap Live, Kirkify, Waifu2x, and Waifu2x Online.
They appear in this directory alongside competitors and are marked as Recommended with a colored badge so you can identify them at a glance. Their editorial verdicts name real limitations — watermarks on free output, narrower community than incumbents, anime-specific tuning that won't match photography-focused tools, and so on — because gushing about our own products would hurt trust more than it would help conversion.
Affiliate & Sponsorship Disclosures
Some outbound links to external tools may be affiliate links — we earn a small commission if you sign up after clicking through. This does not affect the editorial verdict, ranking, or which tools we choose to review. We've removed tools from the directory before because we couldn't recommend them honestly, even when an affiliate relationship existed.
Tools can pay for a Featured listing slot in dedicated ad placements, which are clearly labeled as sponsored. These slots do not affect the editorial content of the rest of the directory.
What We Cover
We focus on AI tools for builders: visual creative work (image, video, upscaling, photo editing, face swap), audio and writing (TTS, voice cloning, music, writing assistants), and coding agents. Within those areas we aim to cover the strongest tools in each pricing tier — free, freemium, and paid — so you can find the right shape for your workflow regardless of budget.
