The verdict
Waifu2x.live started as an anime upscaler and the AI Art tooling carries that lineage — the model is tuned for stylized line work, anime character art, and Japanese-aesthetic visuals in a way general-purpose image generators aren't. We ship it ourselves and use it on our own production pipeline: it sits above Midjourney for anime-specific output and well below it for photorealism, which is the right tradeoff for the niche. The interface is functional rather than polished — built for "type prompt, get result" rather than the Discord-community-gallery loop bigger platforms run. For manga panels, character concept art, illustrated content, and anything stylized, the free starter credits make it easy to judge before subscribing. For photorealistic portraits or commercial photography mockups, look elsewhere — the same focus that makes it strong for anime makes it the wrong tool for that brief.
